Joseph Sutton (1838-1903) was born in Portage County, Ohio, and came to Hudson Township, LaPorte County Indiana in 1855. In May 1861 he enlisted in Company C of the 17th Indiana Infantry Volunteers which formed part of Wilder's Brigade serving in Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia and taking part in the battles of Shiloh, Perrysville, Chickamauga and the sieges of Knoxville and Atlanta.
